We are trained at an early age to gravitate towards objects that are nice to look at and pleasant to touch. In a culture, which seems so focused upon the treatment of appearances, it can be completely overlooked that objects have details and interesting inner cores. Focusing upon organically occurring patterns, I fist took a scientific approach by studying detailed photographs of the microscopic levels of organic objects. This was a great first stepping stone in which I begun to focus upon manipulation of texture, color, shape and form. By pushing the use of uncomfortable textures and shapes, I also hoped to touch on the aggravation of the human senses. Specific textures, smells, and sounds can be uncomfortable to view and touch. Using glass as a lure my goal was to engage the viewer in the direct rediscovery of interior spaces. Wishing to engage the senses of the viewers the audience is promoted to have an interactive experience with the work. The feelings gained directly relate to the uncomfortable inner space of the objects. In order to push these feelings of discomfort the used of a growth like motion was incorporated to link the organic roots of the objects to the over all sculptural form. Glass is a very effective medium for the completion of this idea because of the surface contrast and appeal of the material. It holds a beauty that draws people into taking a closer look. Ultimately your forced into seeing all the different components that make up the organic and to realize that growth can be uncomfortable yet beautiful.
